Ward defeats Kessler

The Olympic Gold Medalist and hometown hero Andre Ward became the new Super Middleweight defeating Mikkel Kessler in the 11th round in Oakland California. The Super Six World Boxing Classic on Showtime Boxing was a great night for Andre Ward, the cheers from his hometown crowd helped fuel Ward to a championship victory.
Ward seemed to control the match connecting with quick jabs to the face. Kessler received a deep cut over his left eye and under his right eye in the seventh round. Kessler complained to his corner before the eight that he couldn’t see. The tough Kessler forged on into the ninth taking more damaging blows from the aggressive and crafty Ward. The match went on under close supervision from the ringside doctor. The fight was stopped in round 11 by a technical decision advancing Andre Ward to the WBA Super Middleweight Title. It was another great night of Boxing as we move forward to the next round of The Super Six World Boxing Classic.

R.I.P. Vernon Forrest 02-12-1971-to- 7-25-2009

The boxing world lost another former World Champion in a senseless act of Violence in Northwest Atlanta. At the young age of 38 years old Vernon Forrest was shot to death in an attempted car jacking. The Atlanta police reported that Forest was airing a tire on his Jaguar when the attempted car jacking occurred; Forrest had a gun and was involved in a chase with the suspects. Vernon Forrest was shot between seven and eight times with a semi automatic weapon and one fatal shot to the head. Two suspects still remain at large.
The former Olympian and three time world Champion had amassed a record of 41-3-1 with 29 knockouts. In a year when we think we have seen enough tragedy in the sport of professional boxing the bad news keeps coming. We have to ask ourselves, when will the senseless violence end and the real fight against crime begin? A father, son , and former Champion was taken from this world to soon.

The Boxing world has lost another legend long before his time. Former World Champion Arturo Gatti was found dead in a beachfront villa while on honeymoon with his wife and son in Pernambuco Brazil. Arturo Thunder Gatti 40(31KO)+9(5KO) was one of the most entertaining fighters to watch. Gatti a former WBC Light Welterweight Champion, IBF Super Featherweight Champion, USBA Super Featherweight Champion brought excitement and charisma to the ring. His most memorable matches occurred with the heavily hyped Mickey Ward trilogies in which were great battles for both fighters.
Gatti was born in Montreal Canada, raised in Italy and resided in Jersey City, New Jersey during his boxing career. Arturo Thunder Gatti has developed a huge following in the Atlantic City area in which he fought many great fights at the Atlantic City Boardwalk. Gatti announced his retirement in 2007 after an unexpected loss to Alfonso Gomez in Atlantic City.
Gatti was a fighter who had the rare combinations of style, looks, skill and the commercial appeal to bring excitement in and out of the ring. Arturo Thunder Gatti was a one of a kind fighter and will be missed throughout the world. Our Prayers and thoughts go out to the family.

Alexis Arguello and I shared a bond that began with our historic fight on November 12, 1982 at the Orange Bowl in Miami , FL. That bond will never be broken. I had the honor of helping my friend campaign when he was seeking political office and I always enjoyed our many visits and phone conversations through out the years. I am deeply saddened by his passing. Boxing has lost one of the greatest champions to ever step in the ring. Alexis Arguello was a true gentleman and I was blessed to call him my friend.

Andy Lee moves to 18(13ko’s)-1 after a victory over Oleg Fedetovs 10-5-0 on the undercard of last Saturdays Klitschko Chaegev fight in Germany. Lee won by unanimous decision in this 6 round matchup. The Irish Southpaw has trained under the great Emmanuel Steward from the Krunk Gym fame. Steward seems to have Lee back on track after last years devastating upset from Brian Vera. Andy Lee faced his first defeat of his professional career in a seventh round knockout at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut. Since the defeat, Lee has won the last three fights in which two were fought in Ireland, and this past weekends took place at Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen Germany.

With the movie selection at the video store slim, I searched the overpriced cable channels for something of quality to watch. Stuck in reality hell, I surfed the on demand channels until I settled onto Turner Classic Movies. Requiem for a Heavyweight goes back to a time in film production when men were real men. An all star lineup with a great cast of legends including Jack Dempsey, Muhammad ALi, Willie Pep, and a cast of other great Boxers.
With Anthony Quinn as Louis “Mountain” Rivera, a one time Heavyweight Contender who is at the end of his career. Jackie Gleason plays the seedy manager Maish Rennick who is out for his own best interest instead of his boxer. Mickey Rooney plays the trainer and care taker for big Mountain Rivera. Requiem for a Heavyweight is a great classic boxing movie that set the standard for a lot of movies to follow.

The Cincinnati fighter defeated Vernando Quintero (7-1-1) by desicion in an outdoor eight round bout. Both fighters came into the match with undefeated records. Broner signed with Golden Boy Promotions a year ago after turning pro with over three hundred amateur fights under his belt. From the start of the fight I got the impression the young fresher Williams would make quick work of Winky Wright by the end of the second. I have to give credit to Winky for standing in there for twelve rounds and taking the abuse at the hands of Paul Williams. Winky Wrights year and a half lay off seemed to be too long for the once great fighter. The faster and fresher Williams dominated Winky for twelve rounds with speed and power. The twelfth round was all or nothing for Winky. The Punisher continued to dominate through the twelfth round winning by unanimous decision over Winky Wright. The Punisher Paul Williams looked in great form and looks forward to a middleweight championship match.

Richard “Big Fella, head Swella” Green was unable to start round 2 due to a possible broken hand. The first round provided a nice exchange of hard hitting action from both fighters. Wilder had the size and reach on Green, while the Big Fella Green is known for his power punches. Green was in serious pain as the ring side doctors cut the tape from the hands after the fight. Meanwhile the 6’7 Deontay “The Bronze Bomber” Wilder seems to be on the road to superstardom. Wilder was the only member of the Olympic team to win a medal in 2008. An all out war” the announcers yell at the end of round one, both boxers slugging away until the sound of the bell. The capacity crowd witnessed two warriors standing toe to toe in a Texas slugfest.
The Baby Bull Diaz looked in great form against the veteran fighter and former champion Juan Manuel Marquez. A flurry of combinations followed by powerful left hooks, the baby bull kept coming.
Diaz brought blood above the eye of Marquez at the end of the 5th. Marquez seemed to adjust to the aggression in the 8th and a powerful uppercut brought the blood to the face of the baby bull.
Diaz goes down in the 9th by a strong uppercut and makes it to his feet to continue for more abuse from Marquez until the final uppercut that lands the baby bull to the mat for good. Juan Manuel Marquez (54-1-36 KO’s) became the WBA/ WBO/ IBO Unified Lightweight Champion of the World.

In a featherweight Championship match Rocky Juarez vs Chris John from Indonesia. This was a great match with both fighters giving their all to the end. Champion Chris John carried the earlier matches while Rocky Juarez seemed to have a late start.
Chants of Rocky from the crowd seemed to bring energy to Juarez as he came alive at the end of eleven. A great Featherweight Championship match as both fighters were slugging till the end. The fight goes to the judges in a unanimous decision and results in a draw. Both fighters believed they won the fight. Chris Juan retains his featherweight championship title and remains undefeated.

Kelly (the Ghost) Pavlik (35-1-30 KO’s) gave the ultimate gift to his great Youngstown fan base by defeating Marco Antonio Rubio (43-5-1 38KO’S) and retaining his WBC /WBO Middleweight titles at the Chevrolet Center in Youngstown.
What started out as a decent matchup with both fighters feeling each other out in the first round? Pavlik’s power and precision punches begin to take over throughout the next couple of rounds. The fight looked to be coming to quick end as Pavlik landed some devastating blows to Rubio and tying him up with combinations against the ropes and in the corner. Pavlik looked great in the ring but seemed unable to finish Rubio early. Rubio’s quickness and craftsmanship in the ring was able to bail him out of trouble and keep the fight alive for another few rounds. The end of the ninth round came as the fighters returned to their corners. Before the 10th started the referee waived his arms that it’s over as the surprised fans cheered and Pavlik jumped to his feet raising his glove in victory. Ray Boom Boom m

Antonio Margarito Suspended

Former Welterweight Champion Antonio Margarito suspended for one year after a hardening substance was found on his hand wrap. A member of Shane Mosleys team noticed the unusual substance in the wrap and brought it to the commissions attention before the January 24th match. The hands were rewrapped and the title was dropped to Sugar Shane Mosley in the ninth round. The incident was not forgotten as The California Athletic Association handed down the one year suspension to Margarito and his trainer Javier Capetillo. Antonio Margarito has been an impressive fighter to watch with an impressive record of 37-6 - 27 KO’S, sadly this incident may overshadow anything the former champion has accomplished in the ring.

The 285 page Autobiography was a quick and easy read that keeps the reader turning the pages of stories of real life in the Hell's Angels and real life inside prison for a crime he did not commit. Zito has always had a dominating presence with looks to kill and the ability to back it up. A self made man who had lived a life and experienced things that some can only dream of. Street Justice is a great read that is full of action and keeps you interested from the first page to the back cover.

The Magic Mans trainer had seen enough and early in the 11th round the white towel comes out against the wishes of Malignaggi. Frustration in the Magic Mans corner as he pushed Buddy Mcgirt away after the towel was thrown in. “I’m better than getting stopped” Malignaggi said in an interview after the fight. The Magic Man seemed to be out of his league and most of the fight he was just holding Hatton off.
Hatton’s response to a possible fight against the winner of the upcoming Pacquiao/ De le Hoya fight “Yeah bring it on”. A Hit man fight with either of these fighters would perhaps be the mother of all battles for the Pride of Manchester.

No longer in the spotlight Randy Robinson is working at a deli counter at the local supermarket. The Ram is trying to make a comeback against Doctors orders. Looking to make it to the spotlight again Randy the Ram Robinson will face his Arch enemy in a grudge match that will revive his career and give him the adoration of the fans once again.
Rourke is no stranger to the ring with an impressive amateur Boxing record 0f 20-6 17 KO’S. As a result of injury’s in the ring Mickey Rourke turned to acting and became a rising star in the seventies and eighties and went on to International Fame. After a drop in demand from Hollywood, Rourkes true Passion to the ring was calling him back. A short pro career from 1990 ton 1994. Fighting under the Alias (El Marielito) , Rourke fought eight professional fights with a record of 6 wins 4 KO’S and 2 draws and 0 losses and hung up the gloves for good in 1994. Mickey spoke to Piers Morgan in BBC’S Documentary series, The Dark Side of Fame about his passion for boxing. Piers asked Rourke if winning a championship world title would mean more to him than winning an Oscar?

Directed by Darren Aronofsky, “The Wrestler” has a talented cast with Academy Award Winning actress Marisa Tomei who plays Cassidy the stripper and girlfriend of Randy Robinson who is trying to make changes in her own life.
Evan Rachel Wood plays the estranged daughter Stephanie, who Randy is trying to piece back together a relationship after being an absent father. The movie is set in Jersey which wouldn’t be complete without a song from “The Boss”. The New Song “The Wrestler” was written for the movie by Bruce Springsteen and will be on his new album “Working for a Dream” which is due out in January”.

Critics are calling The Wrestler “the performance of Mickey Rourkes Career” .

“Never in my wildest dream did I think I would fight Manny Pacquiao, I never thought I would fight em” Oscar stated. de la Hoya has been training hard in Big Bear California getting ready for the HBO Pay Per View. Oscar is down to 145 lbs and says he feels comfortable at that wait. When asked how his training is going The Golden Boy Stated, “No distractions up here I’m eating breathing and sleeping Manny Pacquiao” . The HBO Pay per view will be broadcast live from the Mgm Grand in Las Vegas on Dec 6th. The Golden Boys last fight at this weight was in 2001 when he defeated Arturo Gatti in the fifth round.

Evander (42-9-2) will face the big 7 ft. Russian Nikolia Valuev (49-1). The Warrior is determined to win the Championship back before retirement, if that day ever comes. The fight will take place overseas so the fierce Warrior Holyfield can chop down the giant in his own land. Wasn’t one Russian boxer enough for Holyfield after being defeated by Sultan Ibragimov last year?
Rocky Balboa was a fictional movie. Nobody with an ounce of compassion wants to see a former aging Champion standing toe to toe with a giant saying (I am). Cincinnati Olympic Boxer Rau Shee Warren is hoping for a third trip to the world’s stage. Rau Shee Warren has stated that he will remain in the Amateur ranks for another four years until the next Olympics. Warren would be the only athlete in U.S. History to make three trips to the Olympics.
In Beijing 2008 Warren was eliminated in the first round of boxing losing by decision to South Koreas Oksung Lee. After Warren returned home, he declared he was turning pro. Rau Shee Warren is currently the Amateur World Flyweight Champion. Downinthe5th salutes an Ohio legend and one time Boxer Dino Crocetti. A high school dropout at sixteen, Crocetti went to work in the tough Ohio Steel Mills. With a hunger for the big time Crocetti took a jab at a boxing career. A tall dark haired kid, Dino Crocetti had the look of a contender, until the action started. Fighting under the name of (Kid Crochet), with a record of 1-11, Crocetti luckily left the ring to seek his fortune in the gambling halls and nightclubs.
And one night in a city where boxers career’s are made and shattered, Dino Crocetti brought the house down in Skinny D’ Amato’s 500 club in Atlantic City. Dean Martin went on to a music and show business career that one could only dream about.
Steubenville Ohio has never forgotten their favorite son as the city hosts the annual Dean Martin Festival. A celebration to honor a skinny kid from Stubenville who went on to become a household name and create a sound that could never be mistaken. On Christmas Day of 1995, Dean Martin (kid Crochet) quietly passed away at the age of 77, surrounded by family and more money than any Welterweight of the era ever dreamed of.
